My Last Seizure

Two weeks ago I had a Seizure, my first one in approximately 9 months.I don’t normally keep a track on when my last seizure was but after seeing so many Epilepsy sufferers keep a track on how long they are seizure free I felt like I needed to do the same.

From what I remember from that evening, I had gone to be around 10:30pm watched netflix for approx one hour and then fallen asleep. I recall seeing paramedics around the bed and asking me questions and being able to give them the correct answers. Although I later discovered that I had been asked several questions that I was unable to answer correctly i.e.what is my address?, what is my date of birth?, what day it is? I felt a bit dazed and was comforted by my Wife.

Now here is the interesting part, following the seizure and me regaining myself I said I needed to go to the toilet and decided to hop in the shower and have a scrub up. I still to this day don’t know why I did it! It was 3 o’clock in the morning and i’ve hopped in the shower to freshen up. I’m pretty sure the paramedics must’ve been left confused with the situation.

Once the paramedics had left I went back to bed just as normal and went straight back to sleep, then approx 20 mins later I began having another seizure. The same paramedics arrived had to tend to me (previously if an ambulance is called out twice in one evening it is not usually the same Paramedics who will arrive) and go through the process all over again.

The second seizure took a lot more out of me and I was more confused than ever, it felt like deja vu seeing the same people again in my room and asking me these questions once again. It was then decided by the Paramedics that I had to go with them to the hospital to be seen to and treated.

Now here is the funny part, rather than just going with them I said I was going to get changed and be 5 minutes. I was that dazed and confused I decided to hop in the shower and have a scrub up, I still to this day don’t know why i did it! It was 3 o’clock in the morning and i’ve hopped in the shower to freshen up and i’m pretty sure the paramedics must’ve been left confused and angry with the situation. In the end I got ready and walked up the drive to the Ambulance. I remember having a conversation about football in the bumpy ride to Royal Stoke University Hospital but that was about it.

Once in the hospital it seemed a bit of a blur, I just remember being escorted to a hospital bed and once my head hit the pillow I went straight back to sleep.

It took me approximately 36 hours to fully recover from the incident and I have now gone back to my normal day to day living and continuing to do what I can in helping with epilepsy awareness.

I feel with my whole routine out of sync at the moment due to coronavirus etc that could have played a part. I don’t normally keep a track of how long i’m seizure free for but after this last episode I am going to keep a record and do a monthly update on my epilepsy, So far it is 2 weeks and counting. Before I end this post I would like to thank all the staff at Royal Stoke University Hospital for the care and attention they gave me and in particular the Paramedics who came to my house twice and had to deal with me at that highly pressured time. The work that all NHS staff are doing is amazing in this current time and i’ve said it before and I will say it again, they need a very special mention after this whole pandemic has ended. I hope all who are reading this post enjoyed this latest post and please checkout my youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8Mupmy6Tdg and also support my epilepsy awareness by purchasing a #SZR3 trucker cap, my main aim is to humanise the conversation of epilepsy and make it a normal conversation. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164189508825

  1. How incredibly scary to have two seizures in a row and to be caught in that dazed, confusing state for an extended period. So glad that you’ve recovered and are back to feeling able to resume your daily routine! Thank you for sharing your experience and, again, so happy and grateful you’re okay. x

  2. Big Man, How far you’ve come since not mentioning ‘it’ during your first Club medical for fear it would change our opinion of you as a player! But as you know you cant hide from these things and the truth will always out in the end, whether you’re on the coach on your way to an away game or just lying in bed after a bit of Netflix, either way you know now that the condition doesn’t define you it’s merely part of who you are and as you hopefully found out knowing only gave us the power to treat you quickly and efficiently rather than judge you in a negative way…. Before we knew about your epilepsy we judged you merely as a player but after experiencing that first seizure we judged you as a man and came to much the same conclusion that whatever your challenges in life you are and have always been a good man, a thoroughly decent human being and a great role model for any one else out there wishing to chase their dreams!
    Keep talking and stay safe….
